Diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy

Procedure Description

Hysteroscopy is a low risk technique that uses the endocervical canal, the natural passageway of the body, to gain entry into the intrauterine environment. Since mid-1980s, hysteroscopy increasingly has become the method of choice for precise diagnosis and treatment of intrauterine pathology. The advantages of hysteroscopy as an accurate diagnostic technique are that it not only allows direct visual observation and accurate localization of pathology but also provides a means to sample the site most likely to yield positive results. Techniques of operative hysteroscopy are used in treatment of variety of pathological states. Anesthesia: General.
The most common procedures of hysteroscopic surgery include:

  • correction of septate uterus; uterine septa are a treatable factor contributing to pregnancy wastage
  • intrauterine adhesiolysis; adhesions form between the anterior and posterior walls of the uterus as a result of trauma or infection in a milieuof estrogen deprivation leading to subsequent infertility or amenorrhea
  • resection of intrauterine polyps; both functional and nonfunctional polyps produce intermenstrual bleeding
  • elimination of submucous myomas; they are benign tumors causing invariably considerable bleeding; also they are commonly associated with chronic endometritis, a factor contributing to subfertility
  • cannulation of the Fallopian tube
  • endometrial ablation; this operation is considered an acceptable alternative to hysterectomy for the management of abnormal
  • uterine bleeding
